312 References to Reason in Beelzebub’s Tales
2015-02-13
There are 312 instances of (capital “R”) Reason in Beelzebub’s Tales. There are a number of other “small-r” references. This contrasts with only 39 references to being-Partkdolg-duty, Gurdjieff’s term for conscious labor and intentional suffering, the central method for transformation. Conscience receives more attention with 92 references. Emotion only gets 8 references.
I’ve pulled out all of the significant quotes in a Word doc, which you can download here. However, as I mentioned in the Word doc…
“These extracts can give a quantitative indication and a flavor for the importance that Gurdjieff attaches to Reason, but they cannot replace the understanding that comes from reading these extracts in context. A full reading of the Tales is the only way to achieve this.

hydrogen's
Hi,
One night i was in bed collecting myself and my thoughts was around this post...
in BBT and the numbers of reference each subject has, my observation in that moment about myself was that my intellectual center was the dominant one at that moment and i brought my attention to the heart, then that the emotional center in normal state operate with hydrogen 24 and that the intellectual center(formatory part) works with hydrogen 48, looking from that perspective on BBT i suddenly saw that the whole book is about conscience and also educating the mind through reason that is connected to real knowledge and by this process of reason connect us with conscience, of course that this book has so much more....like the law of seven that is everywhere.
Thank you all for an amazing and deep work you did on Reason, and Good Luck in the new cycle :-) it always amaze me the timing of these processes like beginning a new cycle and that they happens in perfect realation to the movement of the stars, this month conneted to death and rebirth, the beginning of a new cycle, and happy birthday to Ayala and John.
